It came as no surprise that Warner Bros. was considering a spinoff to its billion dollar hit Aquaman. What is surprising, however, is that the film will reportedly revolve around the Trench, the amphibious monsters that try to devour Aquaman and Mera midway through the movie. That's an interesting choice for a movie. And now Aquaman director James Wan has weighed in on the new rumors by expressing excitement -- but not confirming or denying anything.

In case you missed out on Aquaman last year, the Trench are a group of Atlanteans who were cut off from the kingdom after it sunk into the ocean. Over the course of time, these citizens evolved into the Trench, carnivorous creatures who live in the deepest part of the ocean and prey on those who enter their waters.

Once the Trench enter the picture and Aquaman and Mera are swimming for their lives, the movie gets really good and stays that way. Combined with James Wan's affinity for horror, a Trench movie starts to sound very interesting. Rumor has it that the Trench spinoff would have a lower budget than other DC productions and wouldn't feature any characters from the main cast of Aquaman.

While James Wan isn't in the habit of confirming or denying rumors, he did take the time to share his thoughts about the Trench on Twitter. The director wrote that he "fell in love" with the Trench during pre-production and that he had hoped to be able to explore their world more in the future. So, if there is any truth to the rumor, Wan sounds totally down for it.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time one of James Wan's movies gave birth to a spinoff about a spooky creature. That's kind of his M.O. The Conjuring movies introduced Annabelle the doll and the Nun, and both went on to receive their own movies. Just how much this is planned is unclear, but Wan wanted to make it clear on Twitter that nothing he does is an accident.

A movie about the Trench feels right up James Wan's alley, but he's allegedly just attached to produce at the moment. (It should be pointed out he hasn't directed any of the Conjuring spinoffs either). Writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald will reportedly pen a "horror-tinged script" about the Trench.

Warner Bros. has a lot of DC films on its plate at the moment, so we'll have to see where the Trench fall in line on the production schedule. We also still have Aquaman 2 to look forward to, which DC is likely keen to make.
