We're one month down into 2019 and Glass is the clear winner of the box office so far. The superhero movie from M. Night Shyamalan has been No. 1 at the box office for the past three week, pushing its domestic total to $88 million. That's obviously great news for Shyamalan, who took to social media to share his thanks to those who supported the film, and also provide some advice to aspiring filmmakers.
Glass is the third in a series of superhero films from M. Night Shyamalan, and connects characters from the films Unbreakable and Split together. Set in a universe where super powers exist, but in an extremely grounded way, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and The Beast (James McAvoy) go head-to-head while the villainous Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) makes plans of his own.
It's a film that's been in the making since Unbreakable premiered in 2000, and M. Night Shyamalan has previously shared his thoughts over finally being able to see the story he had planned come full circle. Now he heads to Twitter once again to thank all those who helped make Glass the highest-grossing movie three weeks in a row.
To be totally fair, Glass being No. 1 is not much of a surprise. There's essentially been zero competition so far, and I doubt anyone thought that Serenity was going to be taking the top spot. In fact, this is expected to be lowest grossing Super Bowl weekend since 2000, according to Box Office Mojo. Additionally, February is off to a soft start, with the top 12 movies grossing just a combined $55.4 million.
That being said, No. 1 is still No. 1 and Glass has made nearly $200 million worldwide. It's been a long road for Shyamalan to get this film made and it hasn't always been easy (Hey there, Last Airbender). Shyamalan tweeted out that the "system" isn't geared to encourage original voices, but there is a way for filmmakers to connect with an audience and tell the story they want.
Glass' control on the box office likely isn't going to last much longer. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part opens next weekend and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World follows on February 22. Still though, it's been quite the ride for a film that was made on a $20 million budget.
