Sorry, The Batman Beyond Movie Rumor Was Shot Down

DC fans have plenty to look forward to over the coming years. Shazam! is right around the corner, while Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad 2 (or The Suicide Squad now, apparently) and The Batman are all gearing up for production. Unfortunately, Batman Beyond doesn't look like it'll be one of those movies. While there were rumors that an animated movie was in the works, a new report claims that no such movie is on the table at DC.

Rumors recently cropped up that DC was developing an animated movie based on the Batman Beyond cartoon series that aired in the late '90s. The rumors claimed that DC was inspired to pursue the project after seeing the success of Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is nominated for an Academy Award, in addition to being one of the highest reviewed Spider-Man films.

However, it seems like those rumors are untrue.

Umberto Gonzalez from The Wrap tweeted that there is no animated Batman Beyond movie in the works. This was apparently checked on the feature film side and the TV side of Warner Bros. just to make sure. So, if true, it sounds like Batman Beyond fans will still have to wait for that long sought-after Batman Beyond movie.

Batman Beyond is a beloved animated series that aired from 1999 to 2001. Set in the high-tech future of Gotham City, teenager Terry McGinnis becomes the pupil of an old and retired Bruce Wayne and takes up the mantle of Batman. If you were a '90s kid, it was a much-watch program, and even after all these years it still has a loyal fanbase waiting to see more from the franchise.

This is hardly the first time that a potential Batman Beyond movie has been in circulating the internet. There were rumors of a live-action adaptation in the past and fans are often vocal about their desire for a movie. Kevin Smith has proposed his own take of what a Batman Beyond movie should be (old Michael Keaton for the win!) and even CinemaBlend has proposed it's own ideas for how a movie could work.

I think that Warner Bros. and DC will one day cave and make a Batman Beyond movie, whether it be live-action or animated. It's still got a lot of nostalgia around it and it's a fresher take on a character we've seen adapted on film several times already.

There's no Batman Beyond movie at the moment, but stay with CinemaBlend and we'll be sure to keep you updated with new information as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, there are plenty of great movies that are definitely coming out this year to look forward to and you can check them all out in our 2019 release guide.
