The Hobbs And Shaw Trailer Is Bonkers And Super Fun

Following its humble beginnings in 2001, The Fast and the Furious franchise has become a massively successful and beloved action franchise. The property regularly releases new pulse-pounding sequels, which have done well critically while earning a ton of money at the box office. As such, its seems only natural that Universal would eventually expand by producing spinoffs.

New ground will be broken with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which will serve as a starring vehicle for The Rock's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. Fans of The Family have been eager to see how this first new outing will do, and now the explosive first trailer has finally arrived. Check it out.

Does anyone else have chills? The first Fast and the Furious franchise looks just as over the top as the main installments, but the dynamic between the title characters makes this first Hobbs & Shaw trailer stand out among the rest of the blockbusters. Is it August yet?

The trailer opens by focusing on Hobbs & Shaw's big villain: Brixton, played by none other than Idris Elba. While characters like Hobbs sometimes appear to be superhuman (remember that time he threw a torpedo?), it looks like Brixton actually does have powers. Through some mysterious genetic testing, he's made himself basically invulnerable. So it's going to take the big guns to take the criminal mastermind out.

Enter Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs, who is shown kicking ass, taking names, and throwing out sassy lines throughout. The rest of the The Family was presumably unavailable, resulting in Deckard Shaw being recruited as well-- to both men's chagrin. The not so dynamic duo ultimately end up trying to work together to take down Brixton, but it's clearly going to be a hilariously rocky road.

Also featured heavily in this trailer is The Crown alum Vanessa Kirby, who is playing Deckard's MI6 agent sister Hattie Shaw. It looks like Princess Margaret is getting her hands dirty this time around, facing off against Brixton a number of times throughout the first trailer. This includes being taken by the hulking villain as he scales down a building.

Indeed, the skyscraper scene is the most thrilling and hilarious part of the first Hobbs & Shaw trailer. After Brixton kidnaps Hattie, Hobbs and Shaw decide to jump together. But as The Rock's character descends down a building, taking out enemies along the way, Shaw ultimately decides to take the elevator down. What results is awesome action and a mute F-bomb, which is honestly reason enough for this movie to get made.

It should be fascinating to see how Hobbs & Shaw performs, and if more spinoffs come to the Fast and the Furious franchise. There's already a female-led movie being developed, so this may be the start of a major trend for the property.

Hobbs & Shaw will arrive in theaters on August 2nd, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
