Sadly, Brie Larson has decided not to fight Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland for the title of the MCU's Biggest Spoiler. The Captain Marvel star is trying very hard to be careful with the secrets of both her own movie and Avengers: Endgame. Larson actually filmed her Endgame scenes before her Captain Marvel movie. She's new to the Marvel world, but she developed her own strategy to avoid leaking spoilers: Erase her brain of film intel on the hour drive home from the Avengers set:
I just never wanted to feel like I was going to slip up or that I was going to say the wrong thing. I was like, 'I can't live with myself being the one that spoils something.' So I really just deleted it. I tried my best to journal it if I want to recall it and go, 'Oh yeah, that was a crazy time.' And I'm excited when the movie comes out to finally be able to talk about it and go, 'Yes, this was crazy.' But my family doesn't know. I haven't talked to anybody about anything because I'm just a very diligent secret-keeper.
Good for her. Marvel Studios surely appreciates the diligence Brie Larson described to USA Today. Personally, I hope she slips up -- or "slips up" -- and reveals some juicy details. It's not like it would hurt the franchise. Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk) and Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) have both earned mock-exasperation from the Marvel suits and fans for their habit of spilling spoilers.
Mark Ruffalo's mouth got him in trouble when he accidentally spoiled the ending to Avengers: Infinity War, but Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine) was the only one to notice that mistake for a while. It was his phone that did the spoiling for Thor: Ragnarok, when he accidentally live-streamed the first 20 minutes.
Tom Holland's loose tongue has become a running joke, with the Russos praising Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) for often being the one to stop Holland from saying too much.
Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo have even poked fun at themselves, turning their Spoiler-Men status into personal brands.
Mark Ruffalo went on The Tonight Show and pretended to spoil the title to Avengers 4. He was subsequently "fired" by the Russo Brothers. Tom Holland "leaked" the title of Spider-Man: Far From Home, pretending to be sorry that he had no announcements.
It has become a wink-nod tongue-in-cheek bit that Marvel fans recognize. Now when either gent leaks something, you have to assume they did it on purpose with Marvel's blessing to play into the joke.
Brie Larson is apparently avoiding that whole spoiler turf, ceding it to her Marvel colleagues. Her Captain Marvel co-star Jude Law has been the one on tricky ground with his role, trying to deflect questions away from his mysterious character.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a hugely popular franchise, and right now the stars are juggling so many secrets. There are dozens of major characters in play this year -- between Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home -- and they all need to be coached on what they can and can't say.
The existence of Far From Home as a movie seems to be a spoiler in itself, but we're expecting Marvel to explain it all this year -- starting with Captain Marvel on March 8, then Endgame on April 26, then Far From Home on July 5. It's going to be a great year for so many movies. And we're trusting Tom Holland to spoil all of them in advance.
