What Thanos Is Doing In Avengers: Endgame After The Snap

Thanos snapping his finger

Despite being release back in April, the conversation around Avengers: Infinity War hasn't slowed down. Marvel Studios has been keeping its cards close to the chest, revealing little information, and therefore allowing Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel to have the time to shine. But with the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame finally released, the anticipation has amped back up to 100.

With Endgame now just a few months away, co-directors The Russo Brothers can finally get more chatty about the upcoming blockbuster's contents. This includes the fate of the Mad Titan himself, Josh Brolin's Thanos. Since he succeeded in wiping out half the galaxy, what's next? Joe Russo recently answered this question, saying:

He's retired. He's succeeded in the thing he has set out to do. He's done. He did it.

After assembling the Infinity Stones and committing a massive and apocalyptic genocide, there's nowhere to go but down. Thanos is now basking in his victory, likely unaware of the complete chaos he has put planets in. What a badass.

Joe Russo's comments to Empire (via MovieWeb) reveal that the big bad of Infinity War seems to have put his villainous ways behind him. The big purple guy has always had a method to his madness, believing he was saving the galaxy from itself by murdering half of each planet's population. But now that he was able to handle the entire galaxy at once, Thanos is living the life of luxury.

Thanos' fate was teased in the final moments of Avengers: Infinity War, right after he succeeded in his quest and snapped the Infinity Gauntlet. Surviving an axe through the chest by Thor, he's teleported to a new planet, which looks like a new version of Titan. It's an idyllic surrounding, so fans theorized that Thanos might be ready to kick up his feet now that his work is done.

The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame is noticeably missing Thanos, save for a few quick shots. When Black Widow is describing his victory, the Mad Titan's large purple hands are briefly shown walking in a field. His terrifying armor is now hung up like a scarecrow, further showing that Josh Brolin's acclaimed MCU character is totally in retirement mode. But how exactly does a murderous villain retire?

This is just one of the many questions currently surrounding Avengers: Endgame, which seems open to any and all narrative possibilities. Thanos' snap was devastating, and there are far fewer characters to try and reverse the affect of The Decimation. Something major is going to have to happen if the dusted characters are going to be revived, with time travel being one popular fan theory.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.
