Will Avengers: Endgame Top Infinity War? The Directors Weigh In

Iron Man tired Avengers Endgame

To say there's a lot of hype right now for Avengers: Endgame is a bit of an understatement. Fans are foaming at the mouth for this movie. While there are still many questions to ask, chief among them may be this: Will Endgame be able to top Avengers: Infinity War? It's a herculean task if there ever was one, but directors Anthony and Joe Russo aren't focused on competing with themselves. Joe Russo said that they just want to tell the best story possible.

Whether we top Infinity War or not, I don't know. But we try to tell the best story we can with these characters. This is bringing to a close the first decade of stories. I think that alone has a dramatic power to it.

Earlier this year, you couldn't find a movie more anticipated than Avengers: Infinity War. The trailers had millions of views on the internet, and fans were excited to see a film that capitalized on years of storytelling buildup. That excitement ultimately translated to $2 billion worldwide at the box office, as Infinity War became one of the highest-grossing movies ever made.

It helps that it was pretty good, too! The film was balls-to-the-walls entertainment with classic Marvel humor, intense action, and an ending movie-goers won't soon forget.

So, the sequel, Avengers: Endgame, has a lot to live up to. However, it doesn't seem like the Russo Brothers are letting that get to them. The directing team told Empire Magazine that they are focusing on telling the best story possible. They don't know if it'll top Infinity War, but they are just going to do the best that they can.

For what it's worth, they are already off to a great start --- the long-awaited trailer for Endgame broke the record for most views in 24 hours. You could argue that was because of the very secretive marketing campaign finally shedding some light, but that same strategy would assumably boost the movie's numbers on opening weekend as well.

As far as the quality of the possibly three-hour film, it already has an advantage because it's a finale and carries dramatic weight. No matter what, people are going to be getting the feels saying goodbye to some of these characters. Whether it lives up to the amount of hype is a different story, but we won't know more about that until we get to that release date.

All will be revealed about Avengers: Endgame when it arrives in theaters on April 26, 2019. To learn more about the film, here's what we know so far. Believe it or not, there are other movies besides Avengers: Endgame coming to theaters next year, and you can learn about them all in our 2019 movie release guide.
