Waiting for a trailer to drop on any Marvel film is an exercise in patience. But with Avengers: Endgame's revealing the first look at how Avengers: Infinity War will pay off, it's a particularly trying exercise. The Russo Brothers understand that more than anyone, and as such, they thanked the MCU's legion of fans with the following message:
If that message isn't pure Russo magic, then we don't know what is. As not only creators, but also fans of Marvel's Cinematic Universe themselves, the post above launching the Avengers: Endgame trailer doesn't read as just some corporate thank you. Instead, it invokes the spirit of fandom, with Joe and Anthony reaching out as fellow nerds, rather than a director selling an upcoming release.
That fandom has driven the MCU for a decade's worth of films, and it certainly has made Avengers: Infinity War all the richer when looking at the end of year rankings. Moviegoers absolutely loved the film, critics applauded it, and it's the number 1 film of the year at the worldwide box office.
Obviously thanks are in order for such an achievement, especially since Avengers: Endgame has quite a high bar to cross in order to have any hope of topping its direct predecessor. With a cool $2.05 billion in the bank, Avengers: Infinity War gives The Russos something astronomical to shoot for this time out. But to them, it's probably not even a thought, as their Twitter post is all heart and no marketing.
Rather than position the film to be a record breaking follow-up, the directors that started their MCU tenure with Captain America: The Winter Soldier are looking to aim square at the hearts of fans. You can see it with the content that's in the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, as it plays more towards the emotional and personal consequences of Thanos's big snap, now formally known as "The Decimation."
Anyone can put together a trailer of quick cuts, devastation, and grim faces. The Russo Brothers, in hiring whomever cut that trailer for them, made sure that not only were they selling a potentially earth shattering blockbuster, but also a cathartic end to 10 years and 22 films worth of storyline. Those are the type of guys who thank their fans with a trailer like the one below, and those are the type of guys you want directing a film like Avengers: Endgame.
