It all comes down to this. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was left on a massive cliffhanger at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos (Josh Brolin) had succeeded in bringing balance to the universe. In doing so, he left half of the MCU as dust. What happens next? We won't know for sure until Avengers 4 opens in May 2019, but this new trailer gives us our first clues into how Phase Three will draw to a close:

For starters, we won't be calling it Avengers 4 anymore. Taking a cue from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who told Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) that we were in the end game now, the new sequel will be called Avengers: Endgame.

So much for the title not being spoken at all in Avengers: Infinity War, huh, Joe and Anthony Russo?!

And as expected, the Avengers are in a really bad way. The trailer begins with Tony (Robert Downey Jr.), recording a message to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) as he drifts, hopelessly, in space. His mission on Titan has failed, and he appears to be struggling to find his way back to our home planet. Food has run out. Oxygen will be next. And his beloved armor is damaged beyond repair.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the surviving Avengers are picking up the pieces. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) confirms that Thanos succeeded in wiping out 50% of the world's population. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) look beyond defeated.

But Captain America (Chris Evans) stares down at his photograph of Peggy Carter, and he clings to a glimmer of hope. A plan. Which he needs to succeed. Because if it fails, he's not sure what he'll do in the face of that failure.

Thankfully, we know something that Captain America does not know. There's one possibility that Doctor Strange saw. Amidst an ocean of millions of failures, there is ONE chance that the heroes can win. And it might be because of Scott Lang.

The exciting thing you might have missed, while you were freaking out over the actual footage, and then the title reveal? Avengers: Endgame now opens in April. We assumed that Marvel Studios would move this saga-ending chapter up, just as Avengers: Infinity War did. This will allow the blockbuster to dominate the opening frames of the summer season, and likely break all of the records along the way.
