Birds Of Prey’s Margot Robbie Wants Poison Ivy And Harley Quinn Together

Harley in Suicide Squad

The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it is ending with Avengers 4, but thing on the DC side of things are just heating up. Despite missteps with Justice League and Suicide Squad, the DC Universe is moving full speed ahead. Aquaman and Shazam! both have positive buzz, but there's another project in development at Warner Bros: Birds of Prey.

Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey movie is another vehicle for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who made her debut in Suicide Squad. The film is actually subtitled (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), so it's clear that Joker's boo is going to have a major role. But it turns out there's another DC femme fatale Robbie wants to team up with: Poison Ivy. When recently asked about the fan favorite Harley/Ivy comic book pairing, Robbie said:

Yeah. If you read the comics you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship. In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they're actually sexually involved as a couple. I've been trying to -- I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I'm looking to explore that on screen.

Talk about exciting. While Poison Ivy likely won't pop up throughout the course of Birds Of Prey, it seems that Margot Robbie wants the Batman rogue to team up with Harley on the big screen. It's a pairing that has enthralled the fandom since the 90s, and Cathy Yan's upcoming blockbuster would have been a logical place to introduce them in live-action.

Margot Robbie's comments to Pride Source further illustrate how major Harley Quinn is going to stay within the DC Universe. While David Ayer's Suicide Squad was a critical disappointment, Robbie's Harley was a scene stealer who helped buoy the uneven project. There have been a variety of projects announced for the character, including a possible solo movie, a movie with Joker, and Suicide Squad 2, in addition to Birds of Prey. The actress is planning ahead, so perhaps one of these movies will also bring Poison Ivy into the narrative.

Like Harley herself, the relationship between Margot Robbie's signature character and Poison Ivy has its roots in Batman: The Animated Series. The beloved 90s cartoon featured Harley's debut, and her friendship with Ivy was born in the appropriately titled episode "Harley and Ivy". They meet trying to rob the same place, and the duo of villains became buddies in the wake of Harley's temporary breakup with Joker.

Unfortunately, Poison Ivy isn't one of the characters announced for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Instead, Harley will be interacting with Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya. Plus Ewan McGregor's villainous Black Mask.

Birds of Prey is currently set to arrive February 7th, 2020. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
