Avengers: Infinity War Almost Gave Spider-Man His Black Suit

Although Spider-Man traditionally wears his red and blue costume when fighting crime, like most other superheroes, he's worn other outfits over the years. Arguably his second most well-known costume is the all-black suit, whether it's comprised of the alien symbiote or a regular, stitched-together uniform. As it turns out, Avengers: Infinity War considered giving Spidey his black suit, which you can check out in the below concept art.

Six months after Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters, Marvel is releasing Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War - The Art of the Movie, which is packed with concept art for characters, costumes and set designs, as well as production stills and interviews with the filmmakers. In the above artwork from the book (via Twitter user akaspidey), we see Tom Holland's Peter Parker wearing various versions of his Spider-Man costume (including a more faithfully adapted version of the Iron Spider), but it's the all-black suit in the right-hand corner that's of particular interest.

If you look closely, you'll see that Spider-Man's all-black suit for Avengers: Infinity War still has the web pattern, similar to what Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker wore in Spider-Man 3, as opposed to being a solid black. Throw in the artificial web-shooters and the spider-insignia design, and it's clear that this would have been a standard, artificial costume as opposed to Peter coming into contact with the symbiote on Titan. Given what Sony has going with Venom, I'm not sure that would have even been possible to show.

While it certainly would have been cool to see Spider-Man rocking black in Avengers: Infinity, choosing the Iron Spider was definitely the better call. After all, it was already briefly seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and this version of the Iron Spider also rocks the same red and blue color scheme Spidey normally has, giving audiences something familiar, yet simultaneously different.

It seems unlikely that Tom Holland's Peter Parker will ever bond with the Venom symbiote in the Marvel Cinematic Universe given that Tom Hardy's Venom will be sticking around in a theatrical setting, that doesn't mean the teen hero won't get to wear a black costume. Set photos from the Spider-Man: Far From Home production showed the character wearing such a suit, which appears to be designed for stealth purposes. So it all works out for the Web-Slinger in the end, at least on the fashion side of things.

Sadly, Peter Parker was dusted by the Thanos snap along with half of all other life in the universe at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. But not to worry, he'll somehow return to life when Avengers 4 is released on May 3, 2019, and then only July 5 of the same year, he'll seize the spotlight again for Spider-Man: Far From Home.
