James Mangold Is Shooting Down Boba Fett Rumors

Lando and Boba in Cloud City

While the Star Wars franchise is arguably the most beloved property in film history, it's in an interesting place at the moment. J.J. Abrams is currently developing Episode IX, but Disney and Lucasfilm's overall schedule moving forward is largely a mystery. The box office performance for Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn't exactly stellar, and rumors immediately began swirling about the future of the standalone films. One of the long developing Star wars flicks is the Boba Fett movie, with Logan director James Mangold reportedly circling the movie. But now he may have shot down some rumors, after responding to a Twitter troll who wasn't happy with his possible involvement in the franchise. As Mangold fired back via Twitter troll named Blackbird:

Look what I got from a self-proclaimed "lover of life"! Seriously Blackbird, chill. I'm making a period car racing movie w/ Christian Bale & Matt Damon. No Mandalorians involved. Stop reading so much gossip.

Well, James Mangold really shut that down. While not an all out denial of his possible involvement in Boba Fett, Mangold clarified the timeline of his career. He's not working on the Bounty Hunter-focused project at the moment, but on the Ford/ Ferrari movie starring the talents of Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Sorry, Star Wars fans.

James Mangold's recent Tweet will likely be a bummer for the generations of Star Wars fans out there. Boba Fett has been a fan favorite character since he first arrived onto the scene in Empire Strikes Back. A man of little words and epic Mandalorian armor, the fandom immediately become beloved for his general badassery. Unfortunately, Boba still hasn't gotten the time to shine in the greater MCU.

Its important to note that James Mangold isn't denying he'll ever be involved in a Boba Fett standalone film, just that it isn't happening anytime soon. The Logan director has been keeping busy since his acclaimed X-Men blockbuster, and now all sorts of studios want to work with the Oscar nominee. While he seems to be circling Boba Fett's movie, it doesn't seem the deal is set.

Aside from planning on Lucasfilm's end, James Mangold's trepidation to helm the Boba Fett movie may be linked to the somewhat toxic environment in the Star Wars community, mostly due to angry fans. In the wake of massive Star Wars: The Last Jedi backlash targeted both Rian Johnson and actress Kelly Marie Tran, with the latter reportedly fleeing Twitter after months of harassment. Mangold recently tweeted out a warning to the angry fans out there, as things could definitely get a lot of worse. Now we'll have to see if the fans have scared the director away from Boba Fett.

The next installment in the Star Wars franchise will be J.J. Abrams' untitled Episode IX, complete Keri Russell and Billy Dee Williams, on December 20th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
