The Scary Downside Of Doing Superhero Movies, According To Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie

Harley with her hammer in Suicide Squad

If you've been paying the slightest bit of attention to the world of TV and movies, you'll know that superhero properties are everywhere. With three shared universes currently releasing new blockbusters every few months, there are plenty of comic book characters being adapted for the silver screen. And just about every major actor wants to get in on the fun, and play either a hero or villain. Margot Robbie is doing the latter, debuting her Harley Quinn in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. And while this has elevated her fame and seemingly set up up to three more movies, there is a downside to playing such an iconic character. Margot Robbie recently opened up about the sobering truth of these roles, saying:

You're about to be in a comic book film; now here's the worst-case scenario of how big and scary it can get. There's just all this stuff you learn along the way, like, when you get those death threats, it's [smart] to have a security team do a background check on whoever sent them to see if there is any past history of violence because you'll need to know whether you need security to go to certain events. And every time you do a background check, it's going to cost $2,000, so take that into consideration when you're getting yourself into this.

I guess that paycheck for playing Harley Quinn doesn't last quite as long when you're constantly trying to assess your personal safety. Because for every troll who threatens Margot Robbie's life, she has to spend up to $2k to make sure they aren't serious about attacking the Australian actress.

Margot Robbie's comment to THR really explore some of the downsides to fame. While plenty of folks grow up wanting to be rich and famous, the reality isn't quite as glamorous as they'd like. In addition to not being able to do normal things like go to the grocery store, megastars' person safety is constantly in jeopardy. Keeping oneself safe is both expensive and no doubt exhausting.

Alas, the risk does seem worth it for Margot Robbie. While Suicide Squad didn't end up as good as the trailers promised, Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn was universally considered the strongest aspect of the villain-centric film. As such, there appear to be plenty of opportunities for her to reprise the role in the DCEU. Director David Ayer was originally planning on directing the Gotham City Sirens movie, which would team up Harley with Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Then there's the reported movie about Joker and Harley, which will allow Margot Robbie to collaborate with Jared Leto again. Finally, Robbie recently revealed that yet another film is being developed, this time a solo run for the fan favorite villain.

You can catch Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, in theaters now. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies this year.
