Kristen Wiig Is Finally Writing A New Movie After Bridesmaids

Kristen Wiig has kept busy in Hollywood in the time since she said sayonara to Saturday Night Live. This month, she's set to star in Downsizing, the new movie from Alexander Payne. She's also done plenty of TV and voice work, including stints on Last Man on Earth and in the Despicable Me franchise. However, what she hasn't done is sat down to write a movie since 2011's Bridesmaids came out. Now, however, Wiig and her writing partner seem to have started working on a new project and she gave some details in a recent interview:

My writing partner and I have been for a long time writing a script, and now we're [in] final rewrite stage, which is very exciting. It's called Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar.

Rhyming movie titles aren't necessarily my favorite thing, although this in particular has a ring... to it. When speaking to ET, Kristen Wiig didn't necessarily give further details about what the project will entail. If I had to venture a guess, however, it will likely be a comedy starring some very funny ladies but also with something poignant moments. Wiig has ventured into some dramatic territory before, but she's usually funny even in the midst of dealing with serious scenes. It's her natural default, and it worked like a charm in Bridesmaids.

Bridesmaids was the first and only major movie that Kristen Wiig did a good amount of writing on. She and her writing partner Annie Mumolo--an actress in her own right who has appeared in Bad Moms, the TV series Angie Tribeca, Bridesmaids, of course, and more--earned a best original screenplay Oscar nod for their work on the comedy. In the time since, Annie Mumolo nabbed a story credit for Joy and also wrote this year's Megan Leavey, but fans of the earlier duo have never stopped hoping they would write another feature length film together. Thankfully, all those hopes have been answered.

When a project is in the early stages, it can take a long time to get on the radar of a studio, much less move into production, etc, so I wouldn't be shocked if it is a while before we hear more about Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. In fact, even if it were finished within the next couple of weeks, by the time it got purchased, found a producer, found a director, hired talent, organized a schedule, shot, edited and released, we're likely talking years. So, do not sit around waiting for this to happen. Regardless, both ladies have plenty of interesting stuff coming up from an acting perspective, and that should tide us over while we wait for this to eventually happen. In the meantime, I'm still wishing we had gotten a Bridesmaids 2, but that's neither here nor there.
