Godzilla 2 Just Shared Its First Look At The King Of The Monsters

Fans of giant movie monsters are all very excited for the growing Monsterverse currently underway at Warner Bros. Godzilla started it all but it was really the recent Kong: Skull Island that kicked the franchise into high gear. Now, Godzilla is back to try to clear the bar set by the giant ape. The director of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, has posted an image of the set that shows the massive lizard for the first time during production. Check it out.

The image looks to be unfinished CGI, so it's not exactly the most telling picture. Still, that is clearly Godzilla, and fans who are looking forward to the sequel are justifiably excited. The picture was posted to Twitter by the film's director, Mike Dougherty. He hasn't been filling his Twitter with set images, so this sneak peek is quite valuable for fans.

Exactly what Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be about is still under wraps at this point. We know that we'll continue to follow the Monarch organization as they investigate the existence of these beasts, and we can assume there will be large, city destroying, fights among massive creatures, but that's about it. The best hint that we have at this point is the post-credits sequence of Kong: Skull Island, which confirmed the existence of classic Godzilla enemies like Rodan and Gamera. We can be sure these monsters will work their way into the Monsterverse at some point, and it's a safe bet that at least one of them will be part of the new movie. Godzilla needs something to fight after all.

There will likely also be some groundwork done to set up the next movie in the franchise, as we know that Godzilla vs. Kong is planned following Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While we probably won't see the ape in this movie, we may learn of the creature's status given the decades of time that will have passed since the events of Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters has put together a solid cast of actors including Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Bradley Whitford, as well as Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. Like the plot of the movie, we know little about who any of these actors will be playing or how the characters fit in the story, but it shows that the film is putting together a solid cast. Hopefully, none of them will be killed off in the first 15 minutes of the sequel.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently set for a March 2019 release date, so we've got quite some time before we see much more of the giant monster.
