How Godzilla Vs. Kong Will Address The Monsters' Size Difference

Godzilla Vs. Kong

With both stand alone movies finally set up, Godzilla and King Kong are finally going to punch each other in the face with all the power of modern CGI technology. Godzilla vs. Kong will find the classic movie monsters going toe-to-toe, but people who saw Kong: Skull Island know that there's a bit of an issue that makes this fight pretty one sided: Kong is way smaller than Godzilla. Director Adam Wingard is aware of the issue, and he assured fans at San Diego Comic-Con that it will be addressed in the movie.

They gave us a good out in Kong when they mentioned that Kong is still growing, but that'll be a challenge we have to deal with, and we're very aware of that issue.

This weekend, hundreds of thousands of fans have gathered for San Diego Comic-Con, where news on all the biggest movies and TV series are dropping like hot cakes. One such movie is Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place after the upcoming Godzilla Sequel: Godzilla: King of the Monsters. People are no doubt excited for what should be a good old fashioned and entertaining monster movie, but right now the odds are seriously stacked in Godzilla's favor. While this modern iteration of Kong is noticeably the biggest version of the ape ever, he might not even reach Godzilla's knees. Doesn't quite make for an exciting fight.

Adam Wingard spoke to IGN at Comic-Con where the Death Note director made it clear that the size difference between Kong and Godzilla is something he knows about, meaning it will likely be a non-issue by the time the movie begins filming. While Wingard didn't exactly share how the two of them will be able to look each other in the eyes, Wingard referenced a moment from Kong: Skull Island as one possible "out." In the film -- which takes place in the 1970's -- John C. Reily's character says that Kong is not done growing yet, implying that he will hit a real growth spurt in the some 40 years between Skull Island and Godzilla Vs. Kong.

That seems the easiest way to deal with Kong growing in size, but I'm sure the writers of the film are capable of coming up with more creative alternatives if need be. As of now, not too much is known about Godzilla vs. Kong or the circumstances surrounding why the two of them will be fighting. No cast has been announced, but it's been assumed that some of the human characters from the Godzilla movies (and maybe older versions of the Kong: Skull Island characters) will be popping in to watch the destruction.

Godzilla vs. Kong is slated to hit theaters on May 22, 2020.
