Why Legally Blonde 3 Could Definitely Work, According To Reese Witherspoon

It's been 16 years since Elle Woods taught us how to bend and snap and it's been 14 years since she headed to Washington D.C. (We're not going to talk about the TV movie spinoff.) The character, played by Reese Witherspoon, was a comedy icon in the first part of the century, and there's one person who really feels like we need an update on what Elle Woods has been up to for a decade plus. It was Reese Witherspoon who recently explained on The Late Late Show with James Corden why Legally Blonde 3 would have no problems coming together. Here's what she had to say about why a third film in the franchise would work.

I think it would be kind of cool to see her 15 years later. Like, what's she doing now? What do you think?... She could be a Supreme Court Justice, or she could be like a really great, powerful attorney or she could be in prison! She could be anything.

This isn't the first time the idea of Legally Blonde 3 has come up; however, Reese Witherspoon's latest thoughts actually do a lot of leg work in terms of the pitch. Of course, people are still likely to care about Elle Woods 15 years later. A lot happens in a person's life during that time. And Reese Witherspoon, along with James Corden and Tony Goldwyn, all seem to understand that there are a lot of directions Elle Woods could have gone in her career. She could be in Washington D.C. still, or as Corden notes, she could even be the President of the United States. I'm not sure that's the best route to take, but the idea is that there are a lot of directions Legally Blonde 3 could go in should the project ever go into development.

You can take a look at some of the other suggestions in the full clip, below.

If there's anything we've learned over the past several years, it's that Hollywood is willing to reboot almost anything, provided the studios feel they can make money off of it. The original Legally Blonde brought in more than $141 million worldwide on a super low $18 million budget. The second movie brought in nearly $125 million on a $45 million budget--less profit there, but still enough to turn a profit. Of course, Reese Witherspoon is doubtless quite a bit more expensive now, and the real question remains whether or not fans would be invested enough in the character to see Elle Woods get revived on the big screen?

We'll let you know if Legally Blonde 3 ever becomes a reality. In the meantime, you can catch Reese Witherspoon in the murder mystery Little Big Lies, which airs on Sunday nights on HBO. In addition, Witherspoon will be back on the big screen in the upcoming flick A Wrinkle in Time, along with Home Again, Wishlist and the live action Tinkerbell movie.
