God Of War Almost Had DLC

Santa Monica Studios really knocked it out of the park with God of War for the PlayStation 4. The hack-and-slash, story-oriented exclusive for the PlayStation was actually originally going to receive some DLC, but it didn't quite materialize for gamers.

During an hour and a half long interview on the Kinda Funny Games channel, the crew had an opportunity to talk with Cory Barlog about the development of God of War. During the discussion Cory reveals that there was nearly going to be some new content for the game in the form of DLC...

I had a really fun idea for a DLC that I only regret because I would love to have done that, but it was too ambitious.

I can only imagine what it was, but there's still hope we might see it come to fruition in some way with a sequel. Cory has made it known often enough that he has plans to make a sequel to the game, further following the adventures of Kratos and his son Atreus.

The game definitely ends on a cliffhanger, especially in regards to how there's a lot of questions left open with how Kratos made his way to that land and the woman he married.

There's also the fact that throughout the game there are a lot of different realms, nine in fact. Kratos doesn't visit them all because he only has to retrieve certain items to get to a certain realm. It's a little anti-climatic in the sense that the one place that he and his son are trying to get to isn't actually a place you get to stay for very long.

On the upside, though, it definitely leaves a ton of room for more sequel content. _SPOILERS AHEAD _if you haven't played the game, so you might want to turn back, but the end of God of War introduced Thor. Yes, the same Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who wrecked the Mad Titan in Avengers. Well, technically it's not the exact same Thor, but you get my drift.

I'm curious how the DLC would have worked around that because the game ended in the same way that it started, with Baldur coming to Kratos' house and the two having an epic fight in the snow. The ending made it seem like Thor was there for revenge. However, the game cut off before it got that far, teasing a potential showdown.

It would have been pretty awesome if the DLC addressed what happened between Thor and Kratos, and whether they fought or talked or whatnot, but it seems like -- per Cory's comments -- a confrontation like that would have been too epic and too cool to be contained to just a DLC add-on.

Some games don't mind having those kind of encounters and reveals in episodic content, though. Marvel's Spider-Man featured plenty of new villains and story development in its DLC, and there were also some pretty big reveals in the Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 DLC campaigns.

Nevertheless, we probably won't find out what happens to Kratos and his son until Santa Monica Studios rolls out the sequel at some point in the future for PlayStation consoles.
